Wrath of God and Natural Disaster - Getting Closer to God's Voice 1985

By Margaret W. Lavigne

Nature Disaster and God’s wrath

According to the Hebrew Bible, not all suffering caused by God. Suffering can be caused by other human beings, by Satan, or by God.

In the Bible, natural disasters have a strong connection with God’s anger. In Christianity, the advent of natural disasters results from the misconduct of human beings. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, flooding in South Asia and Africa, coupled with a massive earthquake in Mexico. We have seen widespread devastation. God is righteous and God is wrathful over wickedness. Natural disaster shows God’s anger over unforgivable sins and manifests God’s immense power, which allows the survivors to repent their faults. In the Bible, it records that natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods are God’s punishment. The Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh tells the story of a catastrophic flood. The gods bring rain down to end the “uproar” of humankind. But the god of the waters, Enki, warns the righteous man, Utnapishtim, about the impending disaster.

God is angry because the Earth is filled with violence, unforgivable sins and wicked selfish desires. In 2000 B.C., the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh mentions about a catastrophic flood. Utnapishtim saves himself and his family. Noah is a “blameless” human being, and God tells him to build an ark beforehand. So, Noah survives as other people perish in a deluge.

#Apathy is a universal sin

Countless people are being indifferent to other’s sufferings or lose passion for life. There are “forgivable sins” and “7 deadly sins.”The universal problem in that most people commit 7 deadly sins in daily lives.

God does not authorize us to judge anyone, including ourselves (Roman 14:4,12).

According to the Bible, what we have done during our life journey will be judged by God in the Judgment Day (2 Corinthians 5:10). “[A]bout that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven” nor Jesus, but only God (Matthew 24:36). “Everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken” (Matthew 12:36). “God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked” and it’s the timing “to judge every deed” of every individual (Ecclesiastes 3:17).In Revelation 20:11–15, it says everyone will be judged “according to what they had done as recorded in the books.”

“Judge nothing before the appointed time” and God will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart” (1 Corinthians 4:5).

“Love each other deadly, because love covers over a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4: 7-8). “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other” (James 5:16). “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice” (Ephesians 4:31-32). Satan approaches us when he senses negative emotions or negative thoughts.

“[Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24)
