How Can One Stay Safe by Using Language Exchange Sites?

I am interested in doing this. But I am wondering how can one be safe by talking to strangers? Any tips or suggestions?

  • Do not give out your real name, address, phone number, or personal email address. If you guard your privacy carefully, get a fake surname or nickname. Use an unidentifiable email. If any of this information is displayed on your skype account remove it or change it. Do not give out your personal facebook, twitter, Instagram or other social media profiles. If you are uncomfortable posting your photo, you don’t have to. If someone makes you uncomfortable by acting weird or offensive, end the call or chat and block him if necessary. Skype makes it very easy to block and remove someone from your contacts. People can’t track you if you don’t put your personal info in your profile. Don’t feel bad about seeking out another language-exchange partner. When you use n app (on iOS), turn off the location services if possible.
  • Do not share something which is too private or potentially embarrassing.
  • It’s not necessary to use the camera on skype. Find someone who is only comfortable using audio, not video chat. Be cautious. Don’t be overly trusting anyone easily.
