The “Average of Five” Theory - Getting Closer to God's Voice 1985

Everyone has to be responsible for their own life.  But research has shown that we’re more affected by our environment than we think. Motivational speaker Jim Rohn claims that people will be the average of the five people they spend the most time with.

The people we are surrounded are influential to our self-image and self-esteem for sure. When it comes to relationships, we are influenced by people around us on a daily basis, whether they are being pessimistic or optimistic. Our emotions and life values will be affected by those who are closest to us. They affect our way of thinking, work ethic, mindset, self-worth, self-identity and our big decisions in life.

Are you surrounded by people who are being supportive of your career? Are you surrounded by people who encourage you to succeed or come back down to earth? Evidently, it would be easier to stay motivated if your close friends are strong-minded and goal-oriented.

According to a study in the Journal of Consumer Research, “Tell Me What I Did Wrong: Experts Seek And Respond To Negative Feedback,” novices have a preference for positive feedback, but experts welcome negative feedback so that they know how to make progress.

The most rewarding goals are tough and time-consuming. The high position we achieve, the more criticism and challenges we’ll face. Glenn Llopis over at Forbes wrote about how “6 Types Of People Build Your Mental Toughness,” including doubters, critics, and the envious. It’s the course for everyone to brush off unconstructive harsh words from insignificant persons.

The influence of our social network

It depends on how we interact with others. We are influenced by the people around us, especially family members and friends. Also, we influence people around us in certain ways. But research suggests that we might get influenced by people we haven’t even met yet, such as the influencers on social media or renowned authors.  We might even get influenced by the real stories from friends of friends.  I would say, we’re the average of all the information and thinking we digest every single day.

Socialize with People Who …..

The ones we choose to spend our time with have a tremendous impact on us, mentally and physically. Because we might internalize what they believe and what they adhere to in life. You’re better off without someone who is self-centered and being jealous of you. Cutting someone from your life if he/she is uncaring, abusive, overly picky, or neglectful all the time.

Negative emotions affect our life. Chances are, we have negative persons in our social lives and we can’t detach them from our life if he/she happens to be our colleagues at workplace or family members. Make sure to fend against their negativity with your absolute positivity.

Are we the one who is obsessed with negative thinking?

Ruminating old traumas will keep you in a vicious cycle of helplessness. Negative thinking steals light and joy out of good news. The greatest enemy is ourselves. We should be the master to dictate how we live. You are able to change your lifestyle only if you think in a positive way. As you are feeling down, look deeper inside yourself. Check where your thoughts and feelings are coming from.  Setting goals helps you stay on track. You have to be the one to believe that life will be even better 10 years later.
