不退潮流的洞見 - 城市漫步

最近偶然在書中看到艾略特(T. S. Eliot )的劇本「磐石 The Rock」裡著名的一篇短詩。這部寫於1934年的劇本，直指西方文化以為可以用不停的活動、新穎的信念、無盡的實驗與發明去取代那些在生命中最基本的東西，結果使生命空洞貧乏不堪。即使在2007年的今天它依然一語道破在知識爆炸的時代裡，人心的失落和茫然。去年柏克萊大學附近最有名的柯笛書店（Cody’s）結束營業時，書店老闆安迪也透過艾略特的這首詩，表達他的想法。

「哪兒是智慧？我們在知識中失落了；哪兒是知識？我們在資訊裡迷失了。」安迪的告別演講中，用兩句詩人艾略特的名句，表明他內心對現代人遠離書本的質疑。真正愛書的人心知肚明：我們看書，要追尋的並不僅僅是資訊，也不全是為了知識，更多的是想找到屬於我們自己的智慧。艾迪的話說得語重心長：「資訊更快速地檢索出來，但我們有誰得到更多時間？….」

無盡的發明，無盡的實驗
